Text for Discussion:

Planning of the Brazilian Electricity Sector and the World Context of Climate Change

Nivalde José de Castro and

Guilherme de A. Dantas

The energy sector has a small share in the total Brazilian emissions due to the relevant share of renewable sources in the energy matrix. Brazil has a huge potential of alternative and renewable sources of electric energy to be explored. Bioelectricity from sugarcane products and wind energy should be emphasized since they could produce energy having a zero carbon footprint at prices that are considerably more competitive that those necessary to make viable renewable energy sources in other countries. The central question is how to guarantee the insertion of these sources in the Brazilian matrix in detriment of fossil fuel thermal plants. The argument of the authors is that each one of the components of the matrix should have goals and that for each one of them a specific auction should be made so that the contracting and structure of the matrix defined by planning as the ideal one for the Brazilian electrical sector should be viable.
